About

Thomas Smith can hear from only one ear. Yet this has not curbed his appetite to compose music that is intricate, fulfilling, vigorous and nuanced. Inspired by the natural world, he draws his creativity from rivers, oceans, earthly terrain and animals for his stirring and motion-filled aural landscapes.

Equally fascinated by the inherent beauty and non-traditional timbres that occur in found, non-musical objects, he has composed and performed a work for amplified guitar and percussion, (Sonata for Guitar and Metal Shop) featuring tools and supplies found in his basement workshop. Metal saw blades, iron pipes and an anvil are among the objects transformed into pitched and un-pitched percussion instruments for the piece, premiered at the Community Education Center’s juried concert series Performance In An Intimate Space.

An October 2009 residency at the Millay Colony for the Arts in Austerlitz, NY allowed him the time to focus on completing his first chamber work for voice, guitar and wind quartet. The Birds of Winter was subsequently premiered for the Philadelphia Classical Guitar Society in February 2010, with the composer performing.

As a performer, Tom was the founding member of the Philadelphia Classical Guitar Trio and one half of the voice and guitar duo Rhinesmith and Smith. Between the two ensembles he recorded four CDs, performed in the Philadelphia area and toured the Mid-Atlantic States as a roster artist for the Pennsylvania Performing Arts on Tour program. The Guitar Trio was invited to perform at both the Puerto Rico Guitar Festival and Panamá’s Third Encuentro de Guitarra.

Theodore Presser, William Grant Still Music have published his arrangements for voice and guitar. Milmont Park Music  currently publishes his compositions and numerous guitar arrangements.

Always interested in the collaborative aspect of different artistic disciplines, he has been commissioned to compose and perform original music for modern dance troupes. His music was also heard on television as a soundtrack to the environmental awareness show "Leaning Green."
